Research

Prof. Oommen’s research contributions in the last 28 years concentrated mainly on the hormonal regulation of metabolism in sub mammalian vertebrates. The interest ushered in the area of comparative endocrinology prompted him to undertake extensive studies in non-mammalian vertebrates to establish a somewhat identical pattern in these groups as in homeotherms. Prof. Oommen’s laboratory has research collaboration with several laboratories in India and abroad. He has established the T3 receptor assay in a fish model with the Biotechnology Dept. of CUSAT. He has strong link with the Animal Sciences Dept. of Bharathidasan University on several aspects of male and female reproductive biology employing electron microscopy as the tool. They have published a dozen papers describing stages of spermatogenesis, oogenesis and on seasonality of reproduction in Caecilian amphibians. Prof.Oommen had published over two dozen papers on ecology and molecular phylogenetics in this group of animals from his collaboration with Natural History Museum, London. Currently he is investigating the role of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant enzymes in metamorphosing tadpoles in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology. Further, he is investigating the importance of plant products on ROS quenching in association with the chemistry department of University of Kerala. This has also led a research link with MD Anderson Cancer Center, Texas, USA on plant products in Cancer research. This research collaboration resulted in the organization of the two International Symposia on Translational Research one in Trivandrum inaugurated by the President of India and the 2nd one in 2007, Lonavala, Mumbai with Prof. Oommen as the organizing secretary. Prof. Oommen has very recently entered into research collaboration with Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology (CCMB) Hyderabad on Hox D gene expression in metamorphosing tadpoles and apodan amphibians (Caecilians). Considering Prof. Oommen’s contribution to caecilian reproductive biology and molecular taxonomy. Scientists from Natural History Museum, London honoured him by naming a caecilian amphibian species after him (Ureaotyphlus oommeni).Currently, he is the Co- ordinator, of UGC – SAP, with molecular taxonomy, biodiversity, vertebrate & invertebrate endocrinology as the focal theme. Prof. Oommen serves as the President of Kerala Academy of Sciences & Association of British Scholars two agencies popularizing science among people at large and students in particular in the state of Kerala.
